The Challenger baseball program is an adaptive baseball program for children ages 4-18 with differing physical and intellectual needs and challenges. The QLL Challenger division was founded in 2013 by expat parent Faheem Shabaz.
Qatar Little League Challenger baseball started with 6 players and 4 student “buddy” volunteers. The 2020-2021 Challenger roster included 23 players and 40 student “buddy” volunteers accommodating a 2:1 volunteer to player ratio for those players needing more physical support.
While the focus of Challenger baseball is to help players develop hitting, running and throwing skills in an adaptive setting, there are a myriad of lifetime skills being developed on the baseball field. Players learn how to greet fellow players and coaches through shaking hands, and eye contact. They learn supportive peer feedback through high fives and team cheers. They learn invaluable skills through the group run around the bases and team stretch. Players build confidence through leading hitting, running and throwing drill stations.
Since 2013 Challenger baseball has seen a child with severe non verbal autism learn to speak, brothers with profound intellectual and physical disabilities count down the days until the next meeting of Challenger, and every single player on the roster move the baseball tee out of the way and learn to hit live pitch baseball.
Qatar Little League Challenger baseball has provided a remarkable and transformative opportunity for children with differing needs.
