Qatar Little League est. 1997

Qatar Little League est. 1997

Why are there two seasons this year?

  1. The 2022-2023 baseball and softball season is unique because Qatar is hosting the FIFA Men's World Cup. By order of the government all school campuses will be closed from November 20-January 2. Qatar Little League uses the only baseball field in Qatar - located at a school campus (and therefore unavailable during the 6 week mandated closure). The secondary program site at Doha Sports Park will be utilized for FIFA World Cup activities and is also not an available option for our youth sports programs at that time.
  2. Many families are choosing to leave Qatar for some or all of the duration of the World Cup, negatively impacting QLL participation.
  3. From the experience of the 2021-2022 season which was disrupted by the Omicron COVID-19 variant we learned that having a long gap mid-season results in player and volunteer attrition.
  4. Facility and player availability is also impacted by American School of Doha athletics and the beginning of the ASD baseball and softball season.
  5. In order to have enough time in the fall to finish playing before the facility is closed, Season 1 baseball and softball needs to begin September 1. Temperatures in September are normally between 39-40 degrees with high humidity which will necessitate night practices and games. This schedule is better suited for our older players.
  6. When the weather improves mid-October, a mini Tee Ball season will be offered. A full program will also be offered in Season 2, beginning in January. Tee Ball will be located on an all-grass field.
  7. Saturday Skills Camp is planned in October  for 7-12 year old players. This camp will run over 2 consecutive weekends and will include mini games.
  8. Season 2 will begin in January.
  9. Benefits to split schedule include more opportunity for player development as additional practice days are planned and more camps will be offered. Eleven-year-old players CAN REGISTER FOR BOTH MAJORS in Season 1 AND MINORS in Season 2

Why are the age groups combined into divisions? What's the difference?

Reviewing participant information from the 2021-2022 season helped to inform the decision to adjust player groupings for this year. Qatar Little League is a developmental program that seeks to grow the skills of all participants, regardless of ability or prior experience. Adjusting to divisions with participant ages as guidelines allows for more flexibility to place players where they will be able to grow in the game and play safely. Player assessments will be conducted the first week of practice, coaches may recommend a different division for your child.

TEE BALL co-ed program for children ages 4-6 with parent assistance

ROOKIES Baseball co-ed program for boys and girls ages 6-9 with machine pitching

MINORS Baseball co-ed program for boys and girls ages 9-12 with kids pitching and played on a 46/60 size field

MAJORS Baseball co-ed program for boys and girls ages 11-14 played on an INTERMEDIATE 50/70 size field

SENIORS BASEBALL for BOYS ages 13-18 played on 60/90 field

What Division Should I Register For?

  • 6 Years Old: TEE BALL recommended for beginners. Six-year-old players with prior Tee Ball experience or excellent coordination and athleticism may choose to play ROOKIES.
  • 8 Years Old: ROOKIES recommended for beginners. Players with prior experience or excellent coordination and athleticism may choose MINORS.
  • 11 Years Old: MINORS recommended for beginner-intermediate skill level. Intermediate-advanced players may choose MAJORS. Eleven-year-old players CAN REGISTER FOR BOTH MAJORS in Season 1 AND MINORS in Season 2 (no fee discount).
  • 14 Years Old: MAJORS recommended for beginner-intermediate skill level. Intermediate-advanced or physically developed may choose SENIORS.

Can My Child Play Up (or Down) a Division?

  1. Outside of the ages specified above (6, 8, 11, 14) it is recommended that boys and girls play in the division associated with their age.
  2. Players of advanced skill may request an assessment to be evaluated to play up (Example: 10 year old wishing to play in the Majors 11-14 division must demonstrate the ability to play safely with 13 and 14 year old players on a larger field with 50 foot pitching distance and 70 foot base-path and should be able to complete a throw from third base to first base.) Players may also be evaluated to be moved down for skills development or other reasons.
  3.  Please email requests for division change review.

What about Little League World Series or Tournaments?

  1. If there is an opportunity for Qatar Little League to send representative teams to compete in a tournament, travel teams will be formed based on the age guidelines for the divisions associated with the event.
  2. QLL's planned inter-mural schedule does not need to conform with Little League's regular age or division requirements, since we do not play against other league organizations during or after our regular season. Tournament representation is separate from the regular QLL program.

"Saturday Skills Camp" will be offered in late October for younger players. A short 5-week tee-ball season is also available for players age 4-6.

Are camps optional? Can we just do a camp without registering for the season?
Camps are optional.
Players may choose to participate in camp+full season, full season, or camp only.
Whatever you decide, we hope to see your player out on the field!
